Italy is a dream destination for food lovers, history buffs, and romantics alike. From the canals of Venice to the rolling hills of Tuscany and the Renaissance beauty of Florence, this travel guide covers the best experiences, food, and hidden gems from my recent trip.

✈️ Getting to Italy: Venice First!

We flew into Milan (cheaper than direct flights to Venice) and took a train to Venice (~2.5 hours). Pro tip: Book business class for just €10-15 extra—it’s spacious and comfortable!

🏨 Where We Stayed

  • Venice: Booked a hotel outside the island (budget-friendly!) and took a 10-minute bus into the city daily.
  • Florence: Affordable hotel with free breakfast—perfect since we only needed a place to sleep.

🍕 Venice: A Food Lover’s Paradise

Must-Try Eats

  1. Pizza at 10 AM? Yes! We stumbled upon a café with freshly baked pizza—unplanned but unforgettable.
  2. Gelato Stars (⭐ = Must-Visit)
    • ⭐ Gelato Fantasy – Small-batch, ultra-fresh flavors.
    • Venchi – Famous for chocolate-dipped cones.
  3. Aperitivo Like a Local
    • Try a traditional Aperol Spritz with an olive—surprisingly delicious!

Top Activity: Get Lost!

Venice’s charm is in its hidden alleys and canals. Skip rigid itineraries—just wander!

🏛️ Florence: Art, History & Insane Sandwiches

Food Highlights

  1. ⭐ All’Antico Vinaio – Legendary Florentine sandwich shop (long lines, worth it!).
    • Try the porchetta (juicy pork) or prosciutto.
  2. La Menagere – Aesthetic café with fresh salads (great break from pasta!).
  3. ⭐ Gelateria dei Neri – Best gelato in Florence (dark chocolate & pistachio = heaven).

Best Experiences

  • Sunset Boat Ride on the Arno River – Sip wine while learning Florence’s history.
  • Climb the Duomo – Panoramic views of the city (book ahead!).

🍷 Tuscany: Wine, Pizza & Countryside Bliss

Day Trip from Florence

  • Rented a car (cheaper than tours!) and drove through Chianti vineyards.
  • Wine Tasting at a Local Winery – Sampled bold reds and pecorino cheese.

Homemade Italian Feast

  • Ate 30 pizzas with family in Cortona—true Tuscan hospitality!
  • Farmers’ Market in Cortona – Fresh figs, peaches, and local delicacies.

💰 Budget Tips

✔️ Train > Plane – Milan to Venice by train is scenic and affordable.
✔️ Stay Outside Tourist Zones – Saves $$ without sacrificing convenience.
✔️ Public Transport – Used a €1.50 tram to Florence’s airport.

Final Thoughts

Italy is all about indulgence—eat the pizza, drink the wine, and get lost in its beauty. Whether you’re a first-timer or a returning traveler, Florence, Venice, and Tuscany never disappoint.
