2 Weeks in Europe by Train: A Scenic Rail Itinerary Through 5 Countries
Europe offers a vast and interconnected rail network, making it the perfect way to explore multiple countries and cities. In this two-week European train journey, you’ll cover five countries—England, France, Switzerland, Italy, and Spain—while experiencing the diverse cultures, stunning landscapes, and mouthwatering cuisine each destination has to offer. Here’s a suggested itinerary based on scenic rail routes and local insights.
Day 1-3: London, England
Start your European adventure in London, where there’s plenty to see and do in just a couple of days. London is a vibrant, bustling city, and while weekends can be quite busy, it’s easy to navigate. Walking is the best way to get around, whether you’re exploring iconic landmarks like the Big Ben, London Eye, or Buckingham Palace, or strolling through the beautiful Hyde Park.
Don’t miss a West End show—it’s one of the best ways to experience London’s dynamic arts scene. The museums, like the British Museum and the Tate Modern, are world-class and worth a visit. London also has amazing food, from Michelin-star restaurants to casual pub fare.
Day 4-6: Paris, France
From London, take the Eurostar high-speed train to Paris—a journey that only takes a little over 2 hours. Paris is a city I absolutely love, though I’ve mostly visited during rugby weekends, which gives the city a unique, lively atmosphere. If you’re visiting during the week, you’ll find that the crowds thin out a bit, but weekends can be busy with both tourists and locals.
The food in Paris is, of course, legendary. Be sure to indulge in croissants, pastries, and some of the best French wine and cheese. Explore the historic Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, and walk along the Seine River. If you’re a museum lover, you’ll be in heaven with the Orsay and Rodin Museums.
Day 7-9: Geneva and Zurich, Switzerland
From Paris, head south to Switzerland—home to some of the most breathtaking train journeys in the world. The scenery is absolutely incredible, with lush greenery, dramatic mountain ranges, and crystal-clear lakes. One of the most scenic routes is from Geneva to Zurich—an easy 2.5-hour train ride that gives you a chance to admire the stunning landscapes.
I highly recommend visiting Lake Geneva, where you can enjoy a peaceful stroll along the shore, and then head to Zurich for lunch overlooking Lake Zurich. Swiss trains are punctual and comfortable, offering an incredibly smooth ride through the picturesque Swiss Alps. The Swiss Day Pass is a great option, giving you unlimited travel for a day across the country.
For a truly scenic adventure, consider adding a journey through the Swiss Alps—it’s one of those train rides you’ll remember forever.
Day 10-12: Bologna and Venice, Italy
Next, take the train from Zurich to Milan, Italy—a journey that will take you through charming countryside and lively Italian cities. From Milan, head to Bologna, a city known for its food scene—try the famous Bolognese sauce (ragù) and enjoy the charm of its medieval center. Bologna is a perfect place to get away from the tourist crowds and discover authentic Italian cuisine.
When in Venice, it’s easy to get swept up in the crowds, but avoid the heavily touristic areas and head to local spots for your meals. Venice is a beautiful city, but it’s also intense and can feel a bit commercialized. For food, look for small, family-run restaurants with handwritten menus. I’ve found the best places this way, with a real Italian grandmother scowling from the kitchen!
Day 13-14: Barcelona, Spain
After a few days in Italy, hop on a train to Barcelona, Spain, where you can enjoy a mix of beach, culture, and delicious food. Barcelona has a lively atmosphere, and whether you’re wandering down La Rambla, visiting Park Güell, or simply enjoying tapas and wine, you’ll find plenty to do. While I’ve been to Spain numerous times, Barcelona remains one of my favorite destinations for its unique blend of modernism and history.
However, if you’re looking for a quieter, less touristy spot, I’d recommend exploring the Basque region of Spain. It offers fantastic cuisine and beautiful landscapes without the crowds you find in Barcelona. If you’re interested in local culture, make sure to check out the small towns in this region that are steeped in tradition and offer an authentic experience.
Some Tips for Making the Most of Your Trip:
-
Slow Down and Enjoy the Experience: While it’s tempting to tick off as many sights as possible, consider spending more time in a single place to really immerse yourself. I recommend spending 5 days in Paris, then heading to the Burgundy region (3 days) for wine and gorgeous landscapes, followed by 3 days in the Swiss Alps to experience nature at its finest. You can end your trip in Milan, where you can enjoy the city’s fashion scene and culture.
-
Embrace Local Spots: Avoid the tourist traps and explore local neighborhoods and family-run restaurants. In Italy, look for places with a handwritten chalkboard menu and a no-nonsense grandma in the kitchen. It’s often the best place to enjoy authentic dishes.
-
Don’t Rush: If you want to really soak in the sights and culture of cities like London or Paris, don’t try to cram everything into just a few days. Two or three days might feel short, so take that into consideration when planning your trip.
Final Thoughts:
This two-week European train itinerary will take you through some of the continent’s most iconic destinations while offering a chance to experience local life and hidden gems along the way. Whether you’re savoring the beauty of the Swiss Alps, indulging in Italian cuisine, or exploring the rich culture of Paris and Barcelona, traveling by train is the best way to see it all—comfortably and efficiently. So, pack your bags, hop on a train, and get ready to explore the best of Europe!
