Looking for warm places in Europe in December with sunshine, culture & no need for a car? Discover 5 non-island city breaks that tick every box.

Where Is Hot in Europe in December (That Isn’t an Island Getaway)?

If you’re based in the UK like me, you probably know the soul-crushing gray skies that stretch from October to March. By the time December hits, all I want for Christmas is some vitamin D, blue skies, and a city that isn’t shut down for winter. Last year, I spent the holidays in Seville, and it was everything I needed—warm, sunny days, golden cathedrals, historical charm, and tapas on rooftops in December. Absolute magic.

Now I’m trying to top that.

But here’s the twist:
I’m not looking for islands, don’t drive, and want more than just beaches. I’m craving a destination that’s walkable, culturally rich, well-connected by public transport, and still gives me that warm, golden-hour glow.

So, where is hot in Europe in December—without flying off to a remote island or battling crowds in overdone cities?

Let’s explore.

What I’m Not Looking For (And Maybe You Aren’t Either)
Let’s get the obvious out of the way:

The Canary Islands? Too familiar. I went as a child.

Sicily? Initially wrote it off—thought you’d need a car.

Mallorca or Malta? Felt too beachy… until I looked again.

Lisbon and Madrid? Already been. Loved them, but not for a repeat so soon.

The Algarve or Crete? Stunning, yes—but not much cultural depth beyond scenic walks (for me, anyway).

If you’re nodding your head to any of this, you’re not alone.

I’m after something more: think cathedrals over cocktails, museums over marinas, and sunshine without sacrificing soul.

Warm (But Not Too Hot) European Destinations in December — No Car Needed
1. Rome, Italy
Average December Temp: 12–15°C
Vibe: Grand history, cozy cafes, fewer crowds

Rome is a strong contender. Yes, it’s winter, but the cold is relatively mild—perfect for long walks among ruins and Renaissance art without sweating through your scarf. Public transport is solid, and the city’s density means you can explore most major sites on foot. Think Vatican one day, Trastevere the next, with espresso in between. Plus, Rome’s festive lights and Christmas displays are chef’s kiss.

Bonus: You get sunshine, history, and pizza all at once. What more do you need?

2. Sicily, Italy (Yes, Really!)
Average December Temp: 13–17°C
Vibe: Baroque beauty, volcanic views, slower pace

I’ll admit it: I underestimated Sicily. Turns out, its rail network is surprisingly decent. Cities like Palermo, Catania, Taormina, and Siracusa are all well-connected by train, and you don’t need a car to explore the east or west—just don’t try to cross the entire island in one go. Pick a region and settle in. The architecture, street markets, and food scene rival mainland Italy, with fewer tourists in December.

Tip: Stick to one coast (like Palermo or Catania) and take day trips by train or bus.

3. Valletta, Malta
Average December Temp: 15–18°C
Vibe: Compact culture hit, sun-kissed limestone streets

While I wasn’t sold on Malta at first (felt too beach-resorty), several travelers changed my mind. Valletta is a stunner—walkable, packed with history, and full of character. The bus system is reliable, and the island’s size makes everything accessible. It’s the kind of place where you can see a medieval palace, a modern art gallery, and a waterfront wine bar—all in one afternoon.

Don’t miss: Mdina, the silent city. Just 25 minutes from Valletta by bus.

4. Palma de Mallorca, Spain
Average December Temp: 13–16°C
Vibe: Urban-meets-island charm, creative culture, foodie heaven

Surprise! Mallorca isn’t just for beach bums. Palma is a creative, cultural gem with Moorish architecture, cozy alleyways, and amazing food. You can base yourself in the city and take day trips by bus to nearby villages like Valldemossa or Soller. It’s artsy, atmospheric, and full of sunny plazas where you can sip local wine and feel like you’re cheating winter.

Best for: Culture lovers who still want Mediterranean light without resort vibes.

5. Barcelona, Spain
Average December Temp: 14–17°C
Vibe: Gaudí, Gothic quarters, glorious food

It’s true—Barcelona is popular. But in December, the crowds thin out, and you get the best of both worlds: mild weather and room to breathe. The public transport is excellent, and the city has endless options: Gothic cathedrals, modern art museums, street markets, tapas tours, and even beach walks (yes, you’ll need a coat). It’s dynamic, but still doable without stress.

Heads up: Book your Sagrada Familia tickets in advance, even in winter!

Still Not Sure? My Final Thoughts
If you’re chasing the Seville magic—sunshine, history, walkability, and warmth—Rome, Sicily, or Malta are probably your best bets.

Rome gives you grandeur and layers of history.

Sicily offers depth, affordability, and charm (no car needed!).

Malta is tiny but mighty, and perfect for easy exploring.

Honestly, I’m still debating between Rome and Sicily for this December. But wherever I end up, I know this much: I want sunlight on my face, stories in the streets, and that perfect balance of culture, comfort, and connection.
